Seventy years ago, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sent to the electric chair after having been convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage by transmitting atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Controversy, intrigue (and antisemitism) marked this “trial of the century.” The verdict and sentence are debated to this day. In this course, we will travel back to a time when the Cold War, Communism and McCarthyism influenced both America’s politics and its consciousness. Join us as we study the many fascinating aspects of this case and analyze its enduring consequences.
